PGE puts pollution gear at $300 million

November 18th, 2008 by loveblogging

Portland General Electric proposed Monday to spend about $300 million installing pollution controls at its coal-fired power plant near Boardman, which contributes to muddy skies around Mount Hood and in the Columbia River Gorge.

An analysis paid for by PGE and submitted to the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality on Monday projects the improvements including scrubbers — will reduce the plant’s emissions of haze-causing pollution by 75 percent. They should also reduce the types of pollution that create acid rain and fog in the Columbia Gorge.

The proposal comes as new federal clean air rules, arising from concern about haze at the Grand Canyon, force PGE to find ways of controlling the plant’s emissions.

The company will simultaneously install equipment to capture more than 90 percent of the plant’s emissions of toxic mercury, as required by an earlier DEQ mandate.

Martina Hingis’ statement

Text of the statement made by five-time Grand Slam champion Martina Hingis, who retired Thursday after saying she has been accused of testing positive for cocaine at Wimbledon:

Throughout my career, I have always been open and honest with you.

I have been accused by an outsource testing company of taking cocaine during the championships at Wimbledon. I find this accusation so horrendous, so monstrous, that I have decided to confront it head-on by talking to the press.

My weapon on the tennis court is and always was one single thing: the game, the ingenuity on court. And for this style of tennis, there is only one performance enhancer Â- the love of the game.

They say that cocaine increases self-confidence and creates a type of euphoria. I don’t know. I only know that if I were to try to hit the ball while in any state of euphoria, it simply wouldn’t work.

EAST LANSING - When Suzy Merchant took over Michigan State’s women’s program at the end of April, she held a get-to-know-each-other meeting with the players on campus and drove to meet each recruit at her home.

To a woman, they saw enough in their new coach to remain Spartans. No one transferred, and not one recruit who had signed with Joanne P. McCallie wanted to abandon her commitment.

About six months later, Merchant finds herself dealing with another kind of attrition:

10 Foods That Are High In Protein And Low In Calories

November 10th, 2008 by loveblogging

If you’re trying to lose weight then protein is an important part of your weight loss plan. It makes the hunger pangs go away plus supplies vital nutrients to your muscles and organs. Too much of it can be harmful but in your are on a diet - especially a calorie restriction diet - then you run the risk of taking in too little.

What is the right amount of protein? Here’s what Dr. Steven Pratt says in his book SuperFoods RX: “In 2002, the National Academy of Sciences published a new Dietary Reference Intake on everything from fiber to fatty acids…What does [it] translate to in everyday terms? Well, adult women need at least 46 grams of protein; adult men, 56 grams (very active and elderly people may well need more). It’s very easy to achieve this protein recommendation. A woman can reach her daily goal with 3 ounces of tuna (20 grams of protein) plus 3 ounces of turkey breast (26 grams of protein)…A few dangers in an exceptionally high protein intake: the more protein you take in, the more calcium you excrete in your urine, raising your risk for osteoporosis.”

Here is a list of 10 foods that are low in calories but have a good amount of protein:

Hard-boiled egg whites have 16 calories each and 3 grams of protein each.

Egg beaters have 60 calories per serving and 12 grams of protein

Hormel canned chicken breast in little cans has 50 calories per serving and 11 grams of protein

Albacore tuna in foil packet (expensive) has 90 calories per serving and 19 grams of protein

Fat free cheese slices (also a bit expensive, but worth it) have 30 calories per slice (3 slices almost 100 cals) and 5 grams of protein per slice (would be 15 grams of protein if 3 slices eaten)

(This one is weird, I know) A jar of baby meat sticks has just 70 to 100 calories, and there are 9 meat sticks in the jar! There are 8 grams of protein per jar.

Skim milk has 90 calories in a whole cup and 8 grams of protein (Hot or cold, mixed with sugar free Hershey’s syrup-yum!)

Swiss Miss diet hot chocolate mix - only 25 calories in a whole packet! - 2 grams of protein (make it with skim milk and it’s even more protein and SO good!)

Cottage cheese in half cup servings is 100 calories for 4 percent (lower fat versions have less calories) and a bit less than 12 grams of protein

Kidney beans or garbanza beans or similar - 100 calories per serving (about a third of a can) and 8 grams of protein. Beans are very healthy but need something zippy. They’re great hot with raw onion on top and vinegar or ketchup.

Refried beans have 100 calories per 1/2 cup serving and 8 grams of protein.

As you can see, there are a number of low cost options for high protein mini meals that don’t break the calorie budget. Incorporating small amounts of protein into your diet all throughout the day is a guaranteed way to cut down on hunger and lose weight quicker.

If you want to try a calorie restriction diet that’s actually fun and easy to learn check out the Six Word Diet website. There’s even a free forum with over 100 recipes and many supportive people who are losing weight quickly.

List of Raw Foods

November 7th, 2008 by loveblogging

Everyone takes into consideration what kind of healthy diet to embrace in order to stay in shape. Others can’t just resist indulging too much almost every day, leaving them overweight or obese. Obesity is among the health-threatening issues that the fitness industry aims attention on. Weight loss clinics are mushrooming while existing fitness clubs continue to offer trendy aerobic sessions and exercise machines that basically help people lose weight. Those who are too watchful of their figure and extremely particular about food intake, their eyes are glued on the list of raw foods to eat. Raw dishes are not only rich in fiber but they are also the simplest to prepare as to-go meal packs.

Raw food and fitness are jointly on the same line. You probably have pondered on whether the list of raw foods suggests that eating raw would be the healthiest method to lose weight. It’s a “big yes” in that raw food and organic recipes are rich in fiber and free from artificial ingredients that may be harmful to our body. Those who take raw foods as normal meal choices have been found by dietitians to be sharper thinkers and more energetic movers than those who do not even eat a single eggplant, carrot or okra in a week’s time.

The list of raw foods doesn’t only display the types of healthy food choices you can pick. What you can also find on the virtual pages are significant inputs about why eating raw food is healthier than having cooked meals. Raw foods are less fattening, less oily, not added with preservatives and not enhanced by commercialized spices. Good recipes of healthy raw foods are found online, so if you are just persistent on finding the best ones, you can spot so much that you can’t stop from preparing raw meals for you and your family. You might want to get a high quality blender for your raw fruits for yummy fresh juice. Also, when preparing salads, you have to make sure that you’ve washed the ingredients thoroughly with warm water.

Researchers tell that grilling and frying foods are actually less healthy than leaving the food as it is, chopping it and eating it raw. Cooking produces mutagens and carcinogens in food which could trigger health issues if your body is not resistant enough. The list of raw foods found online takes you to an exploration of the many institutions, shops and supermarkets that actually display a wide array of vegetables and fruits that include squash, lettuce, pepper, celery, rosemary, carrots, cucumber, bitter melon, watermelon, apple, berries and nuts that can all be eaten raw when mixed as a salad or munched in individually. Green leafy and fruit salads are popular choices among dieters.
